Protective Lubrication - How to Apply the Canning Process?

How is the canning or protective oiling process done?

If the machines and engines will not be used for a long time, the engine liner walls, piston rings, main bearings, arm bearings, crankshaft, gears, etc. will be damaged due to oil film formation during operation. The oil film will disappear on the surfaces and these surfaces will remain oil-free for a long time. Corrosion will begin over time on surfaces that remain oil-free, especially due to high humidity.

Yağsız kalan yüzeylerde, özellikle yüksek nem nedeniyle zamanla korozyonlar başlayacaktır.
On surfaces that remain oil-free, corrosion will begin over time, especially due to high humidity.

If the engine is started carelessly after waiting for such a long time, there will be metal-metal friction on the above-mentioned surfaces, which will cause very rapid wear. For this reason, in order to minimize such wear, when starting after a long wait, the engine should be run at cranking speed and the fuel lever in the closed position until oil pressure is seen, and the relevant surfaces should be pre-lubricated.

The preventive lubrication steps should be as follows:

  • Exterior surfaces are free from dust, rust, grease, oil, etc. cleaned from dirt. Surfaces with damaged paint are painted again.

  • Air filters and containers are cleaned. Filters, gaskets, O-rings and seals are checked. If it is damaged, it will be replaced.

  • The parts that need to be lubricated in the lubrication system table in the maintenance manual are lubricated.

  • Engine oil and filters are replaced.

  • If your machine has an air type engine, its tank is filled with a mixture of 50% VCI oil - 50% engine oil.

  • VCI oil is filled into the crankcase of the machine, up to 3-4% of the total capacity.

  • Air filters are taken out. Apply 50-50% VCI oil-engine oil mixture to the intake manifold and turbo inlet using a spray. (VCI oil mixture can also be applied by removing the plug that controls the “turbo boost” pressure. The minimum application rate should be: 5.5 ml/Engine Volume.)

  • Using a spray, 50-50% VCI – Engine Oil mixture is applied to the exhaust manifold.

  • The fuel in the main fuel filter is drained and the fuel filter is cleaned.

  • Fuel prefilter is cleaned. The filter housing is filled with special “calibration oil”.

  • The clean fuel pre-filter is installed, and by using the feed pump, the clean fuel is ensured to reach the main fuel filter and the engine.

  • By opening the drain valve in the fuel tank, the water and dirt in the fuel tank are removed. To prevent possible corrosion inside the fuel tank, VCI oil is applied at the rate of 30 ml/30 Lt.

The injectors and/or ignition plugs are removed and 30ml of 50-50% VCI–Engine Oil mixture is applied to each cylinder.

  • The injectors and/or ignition plugs are removed and 30ml of 50-50% VCI–Engine Oil mixture is applied to each cylinder.

  • All exposed joints, rods, etc. moving parts are lubricated with grease. (Note: All areas with open ends or covers such as engine air inlets, exhaust outlets, flywheel housing, crankcase ventilation, oil dipstick must be closed. These closed parts must be tight and waterproof.)

  • Batteries are disassembled and stored, and during storage, the batteries need to be checked periodically and charged when necessary.

  • Battery terminals should be covered with plastic caps.

  • All straps are loosened.

  • The machine/motor is sealed in a way that is watertight but also allows airflow around the motor.

  • Canning date etc. can be written in a suitable place on the machine. An informational note with notes is left or posted.

  • The waterproof casing in question is checked externally every two or three months for possible corrosion.
